Selecting diamond wheels PDF Print E-mail

In order to make a correct choice of diamond wheels it is necessary to take into consideration:

  • setting up priorities of processing conditions (working time, quality of processed surface);

  • the machine tool parameters (broach speed, longitudinal and transversal feed, cooling possibilities etc.);

  • choosing the diamond wheel shape from catalogue. It is advisable to avoid special forms. Special shape wheels are more expensive and the delivery time is longer;

  • the large diameter of wheels ensure high stability of the grinding face width and stave off wheel overheating;

  • cup-grinding and plane-grinding wheels with narrow grinding-face width grind quicker, effortlessly and do not get overheated. The grinding face width is depending on the surface to be processed. Broad grinding face width secure better processing in manual operations.

  • higher grinding face width proves to be more economical.

  • the bore sizes tolerances comply with ISO class H6.

  • it is advisable to choose maximum grain size in order to achieve optimum processed surface quality.

SURFACE QUALITY

In order to get high metal removal rate it is more advantageous to use wheels of different grit sizes for rough and then finish grinding.

FEPA grit size Surface finish required Grinding operation
Ra (µm) Rt (µm)
D 181 0,53 3,5 Very rough grinding
D 151 0,51 3.1
D 126 0,45 2,8 Rough grinding
D 107 0,40 2,8

MD 20 0,05 0,4
MD 7 0,025 0,2

DIAMOND CONCENTRATION

It is one of the most important indicator of a grinding wheel and it influences to a great extent the cutting capacity and durability of grinding wheels. The resistance of the grinding face and of the cutting edge rises with concentration. That is why the concentration of the sharp profile wheels (14 EE 1 and 14 FF 1) amounts to 100-125. High concentration (75-100) are used also for narrow grinding face wheels (6 A 9 type). For high concentration wheels only hard bonds should be used. The concentration of metal bonded wheels must be 1 or 2 steps higher than resinoid bonded wheels.
